Mon Avis (Movie Review) : Laga Chunari Main... Old Wine Old Bottle

Laga Chunari ... is a regressive film in many terms. No it is not preachy and contains no social message. It is hooked upon a bunch of stars who play their part fairly and manage to tell a short story in a very very long film. Rani Mukherjee is a simple young gal in an orthodox small city of Varanasi, her life plagued with problem with an ailing dad (Kher), overworked..hyper tensed mother (J Bachhan) constantly fretting for money, a sweet little sis (Konkana) and a bunch of vile characters set to encroach the only abode they have. Forced by circumstances, Rani lands up in Mumbai where she is turned down in Job interviews for the lack of qualifications and abused by a call center boss giving her an untrue promise of a job.

Then she turns to high class prostitution (escort) service which she remorselessly chooses as the profession.

Ups:
  • Only saviour is the power packed cast who are able to decently bring this cliched story to life
  • The movie unlike lot others of its genre (B- grade attempt Julie et al) is not preachy and does not attempt to carry a social message
  • Nice film packaging with decent score and good performances across characters
  • And yes i must say.. a good scenic package of shots of the holy city of Varanasi [:)]
Downs:

  • Too much has been said and done on the subject and Laga Chunari ... does nothing different. Old wine and old bottle... the worst part of course that Rani's character evokes absolutely no sympathy
  • The script and more so the screenplay is too flat to address anything in its entirety leaving the audience gawking with a dose of near perfect lightening and sets
  • The movie is simply too long crossing 150 mins
Watch it if you are getting too bored for the lack of choices..But if don't, you really dint miss anything

Just wondering..... If Rani's character in the film can be given a make-over to become an escort, what prevented her to use her new found english-prowess in getting a job, one of the reasons for which she was denied it earlier.
I agree that the movie does not attempt to be preachy, but why should it be labelled "journey of a woman".... The woman chose to take the high-speed lift to material possessions, rather than the path less-trodden.... Indian women are made of sturdier material I suppose.....
