Mon Avis: Movie Review - Dostana - Candyfloss flick!

So let me not tell you that this is PG 16 for India (.. ok.. PG 2 by American Standards :) ).. let me not tell you that this movie champions the cause of Gay Rights! Because it doesn't, far from it actually and let me not tell you that this is anything else but a crass attempt to parody gays, show some skins of both genders and of course, in the process of all this - make some neat cash. I try not question the intent of film making if it is utterly clear - This is a crass cinema. But one that works with the audience in urban India or abroad.

Movie is all about Abhishek and John pairing up , pretending to be a gay couple to rent a posh Miami penthouse owned by an orphan - but - too hot Priyanka Chopra! Throw in a dash of gay lampooning , sit com and couple of regular Dharma studios - a punjabi hyper mom played by Dharma fave Kiron Kher , a stereotypical gay vibes fashion designer played by Boman Irani and the likes.

Ups :
  • Movie works partially due to some hilarious gigs in the first half, all - however - aimed at tickling the funny bone using absurdity of gay relations rather than reality of it. Audience, of course doesnt care, why else do you go to Dharma for this. Nair, Kukoonoor or even Bhandarkar could be it.
  • Typical flashy venues, though I would prefer Miami Vice, Burn Notice or even CSI - Miami, shooting a first bollywood movie at Miami certainly eases the cinematography
  • To keep it simple, Abhishek's buffunory works - John doesnt spoil the broth - and Priyanka is super hot eye candy with whatever little she has on her body throughout
Downs:

  • Shoddy script - draggy second half with unnecessary and unnatural and forced melodrama - i think people got desperate to just wind up the shooting some how and go!
  • Music is certainly not the studios best. They have had better days.
  • They lost the plot somewhere with Bobby Deol! I do not know why have three woody faces act in a movie - all three pathetic dancers . Bobby has a forced expression all the way. Or may be its my bias. Anyway, it certainly did not lend any surprise tick to the movie.

Time pass entertainer which works because of its regular fluff! Watchable on an otherwise worthless day!

Let me not tell you the plot is a copy of an Adam Sandler, Kevin James (King of Queens guy) movie "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry"..... :D ....somehow everybody missed the blatant inspiration....even the oh so godly movie reviewers (Rajeev Masand and clique).....

For me, the gay gag went on for too long in the film. According to Masand, the film loses tempo in the second half. I started getting bored after 20 minutes- right from Boman Irani's entry. You're right about the music. Vishal Shekhar can do much better than this.

Music was unappealing - I was somehow consoling my self to laugh in the first half, for all the ticket's worth.. he he

the gay factor (if humorous) somehow works in movies..and skin show was never an issue..right..unlike QoS.. ;)

True, as a society, we do not mind using gay to inject some dash of humor. But is it really progressive? I dont think so. The stigma with Gay-hood is never going to be washed out this way. Anyway! I am no one to go into the debate - If it is still raging in US, India will take another 50 years to accept it. Lol

Skin show wasnt a problem at all :) I was obviously only gazing at PC's costumes! Lol
