One doesn't actually buy into it until much later in the movie. The mystery of the phone call seems overdone at first and one realises that it must be Karthik's own hallucination? Is it or is it not? The movie then leads you to believe that the person behind the call may be real? Is he or is he not? But what actually you find out at last, let me assure you, leaves you utterly satisfied with a sense of compliments towards ingenuity of the director or/and script writer. This movie is about a loser Karthik (Farhan) whose life turns 180 when he gets a call from Karthik (once again Farhan ! ). The caller claims to be the same man Karthik speaking in the same voice as our protagonist. So he knows all the intimate secrets of our man and knows him as his own self. One thing leads to other and you see our man getting smarter, richer, upmarket and acquiring his arm candy (played by Deepika) who did not even notice him before his new Avatar. Then, one day after being exposed to have played a role in our loser's life , the phone Karthik turns against our protagonist and then hell breaks loose. Within a day, his life is crippled and all that he worked out of his smartness (including Deepika), is reversed leaving him miserable.
Ups :
- Farhan Akhtar - This man has showed us how to direct, produce and now act successfully over different films based on different themes. His refreshing demeanor in all his roles so far have been very endearing to the audiences, knowing that none of those were stereotypical roles even if in cliched scripts. He has done it again and single-handedly carries this movie and its otherwise sluggish screenplay. He is timid in his pre-avatar and utterly suave in his post avatar. There is a thing about this man's simplistic dialogue delivery and a tongue-in-cheek humor that almost culminates in this very actor-critical movie. His execution delivers tidy credibility that audience can attach itself to and move along to this thrilling pot boiler
- Script/Direction/Dialogue: All these departments (done by Vijay Lalwani) have done an excellent job to bring this tale in a very crisp form. Nothing much really seems overdone , especially in the first half, when the metamorphosis of our protagonist is shown with utmost believability and an underlying style. The winner, as I said earlier, is the way this script satisfies its audience in its climax. You will not be left to doubt its elements and call it fantasy.
Downs:
- Screenplay : Is apt in the first half, but becomes slightly sluggish in the second half until you are told are about whos, hows and whys of things! This film could easily be shorter by good 15-20 minutes despite its crisp and tight editing.
Watch if if you are looking for some thrilling cinema and if you are a recent convert to Farhan's fan base. There isn't much from Deepika to invoke her fan base :) A decent suspense thriller (sans any murder mystery) to have appeared after a long time.
