Mon Avis : Review - Iron Man 2 - The lesser mettle!

Iron seems to have lost its sheen. While I was enamoured watching a fresh super-hero so suavely brought onto the screen in Iron Man 2, I am mostly put off by the same trap most sequels fall into - brooding, self-introspecting, haughty hero who needs a bout of self-discovery with a sense of purpose - a similar overkill as in spiderman 2 (and 3) and others.
Here was a character who truly enjoyed being a super-hero with a flair and less nonsensical turmoils. Plus, he was not an undercover superhero. I definitely dint ask for IM 2 sitting in his condo mooning over his fuss with dad. Cummon - there was more to this flamboyant debonair. Anyway, what we do get is the zillionaire playboy Stark revelling in his i-created-world-peace talk, summoned by the senate and grudged at by his competition - Hammer (Sam Rockwell). Further to all this, there is rise of another abstract physicist son of his dad's partner (Micky Rourke- sidelined in this non-muttering role) hijacking arc-reactor technology and ganging with Hammer to bring IM down. Then you have the quintessential-to-Stark;s-life Pepper pots (Paltrow) mothering him . And oh! Lest I forget you have another set of characters thrown in for good measure - Don Cheadle, Samuel L Jackson and ever so dishy , Scarlett Johnson. What about them? Let me not spoil your fun.
Ups
  • Robert Downing Jr. - He looks as stylish as ever and his quips do remain - Victim to the mushy script, he is downed a little
  • Sequences - Most clanking of metals in this movie is fun - So are the 'bots fights - The only grudge : these are too less and sometimes clunky. The F1 circuit scene is a gem and so is the fight in the club.

Downs:

  • Script doesn't entirely smell as fresh as the first one - We see a lot of unnecessary deviations meant to create a sense of higher world order et al. The audience frankly doesnt want it. Give us some high-fired blazing techno action! That's Iron Man
  • Scralett/ Samuel/ Don Cheadle - Frankly, I understood most of this cast was to create fire-power and glamorise the sequel. But frankly, all of them remain underused. Ever Rourke is underplayed though his fight sequences cover up for it.

You can watch it with tamed expectations. Ofcourse, there is not much on the BO this summer.

I agree with your review. I personally am a great fan of the first movie and this movie is quite a disappointment. Except for the effects, I guess the team did not do anything.

@ Lonely - Thanks - Will do!

@ Pavan- There was too much gas and less substance - The magic couldn't be repeated.

I mostly agree with you.. The screen play follows the usual sequel story telling . But i felt the movie was still really really stylish (RDJ was awesome)and more importantly the intermittent absurdly sensible jokes makes it a enjoyable watch if not down right great.

@ Bhabani - Even the style quotient, though present, was available only in parts and that is owing to the character of RDJ and the man himself. Otherwise, the element of thrill were lesser. Lets see whats with IM 3 (definitely on the block).
